The key seo facts in this article are:
Good Keywords,
Heading Tags,
Keyword Use not Abuse
Good Keywords
Choose keywords carefully, they are one of the most important
factor on your website. The right keywords and phrases will maximise
benefit of traffic and enquiries,
keyword research is key
to success. Things to bear in mind when
choosing your keywords:
- Use keywords that People Are Searching For. It is no use guessing
what people will search for, better to get actual terms that people
type into search boxes to target the best words. There are various
keyword finders that will show keywords people are actually typing
in. Make a list of popular words and phrases, the more popular the
keywords, the more potential traffic. But there will also be more
competition for top keywords.
- Be specific, Don’t Be Too General. More general keywords and
phrases are more difficult to get high rankings.
For example:
Term Google Results
Overture Searches
“fishing”
14,400,000
272,330
“fly fishing”
770,000
136,584
“fly fishing gear” 13,000
50,952
“fly fishing alaska” 5,320
12,732
Fly fishing alaska is very specific and has least searches of the
4 terms although still plenty of searches and least competition.
- Check out your Website Competition. If there are alot of very well
optimised pages and sites for certain keywords, try to find similar
but less competitive words to make it easier to be ranked.
Heading Tag
Inserted between tags <H1></H1> . These html tags are used by
some search engines as an indication of the words that are important
on a web page.
The Heading tags are normally at the top of a page. Aim to use
keywords in the Heading text between the H1 tags.
Keyword Should be Used not Abused
Dont insert lists of keywords. Keywords should be within correct
text to be read as informative information not as a list.
Lists of keywords are allowed in the keyword meta tag but no where
else. Use your words in descriptive content.
For example - this list of keywords in a page would be spam and
abuse:
fish, fishing, fly-fishing, fly, poles, fish bait, fishing poles,
tackle, fish tackle…
But if these words are written into sentances, then they are no
longer spam but rich text:
Don’s Fishing Tackle Shop offers many products for the fisherman,
including poles, bait, tackle and more. Ask for details of fly
fishing in the region.
